This is a crow sized bird with a long tail. The male is shining black with a greenish yellow bill and red eyes. The female has a tinge of brown on black,with white spots all over. at the onset of spring one can hear its friendly neighborhood call, kuoo kuoo at dawn with a consistently rising pitch. It has a tall pointed black crest, red and white cheek patch and thin black moustache. The tail long and brown with white terminal feathers, and a red vent. It has brown upper parts and whitish under parts with a dark spur running onto the breast at shoulder level.
